Second Atomic Bomb Crew - Bockscar

Photograph of

This image depicts the crew of Bockscar, the B-29 which carried the atomic bomb (code-named “Fat Man”) to Nagasaki.  The crew which flew the mission on 9 August 1945 was not Bockscar's regular crew.

The National Museum of the Air Force describes this photo.  The nose art was added later and was not on the plane when it flew to Nagasaki.

Bockscar and crew (note the missing nose art).  Capt. Kermit Beahan (wearing glasses), whom many believe saved the mission from failure, stands next to Maj. Charles Sweeney (dark shirt), the pilot and mission commander.
