This image depicts the secret path, revealed by Ephialtes to the Persians, which the Immortals followed in their final assault at Thermopylae. 

Before its existence was known by Xerxes, his forces were unable to penetrate and overcome the defenses mounted by Leonidas and his men.  After Ephialtes' betrayal, all of the defenders died.
