Shamash History Tragedies and Triumphs Ancient Places and/or Civilizations Archeological Wonders Geography

Shamash was the Akkadian sun-god.  This image depicts him on a stele - known as the "Shamash Stele" - receiving homage from an individual (likely a king who commissioned the work and whose image is broken-off from this ancient object).

Found in Susa, Iran, the stele is made of limestone and is 67 cm high.  Scholars believe it was most likely created sometime between the end of the 3rd to the beginning of the 2nd millennium, BC.

The stele is maintained at the Louvre, in Paris.  To see a better view of it, check-out the Lessing Photo Archive.
