Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Dwarfs are a part of German folklore. In “Snow White” - known in German as Schneeweisschen - the dwarfs are miners, but they could fill other roles as well (depending on the source of the tale).

This image illustrates an “evil dwarf” who has caught his beard in a split tree. Alexander Zick (1845 - 1907) created the illustration during the late-19th century. It is called Schneeweisschen und Rosenrot ("Snow White and Rose Red").

In Disney’s classic retelling of the famous fairy tale, the dwarfs are not evil. Their Disney names are:

  • Bashful
  • Doc
  • Dopey
  • Happy
  • Sleepy
  • Sneezy
  • Grumpy
