As American astronauts gained more experience “going into space,” NASA created different vehicles for astronaut launching and traveling.
In this image, NASA compares the size of the three main “space capsules” which the USA used before the space shuttle:
Mercury - the earliest space vehicles had room for only one astronaut.
Gemini - the second-oldest space vehicles carried two astronauts.
Apollo - the space capsules which carried astronauts to the moon had room for three people.
