Spencer West at Play during His Youth

Despite missing much of his legs, following his first amputation surgery, a very young and smiling Spencer West plays outside.

His parents, Kenny and Tonette West, always helped their son to understand that he had an important place in the world, just like able-bodied people. Neither he nor they considered his disability as a hindrance in life.

Allowed to do what other little boys did—like playing in the dirt—helped Spencer to believe that his legless torso would not cause him to live a joyless life.
