Springboks - Basis of Name

Springboks - Basis of Name Social Studies Sports

The Springboks (a South African rugby team) are named after the springbok (a South African antelope) which predominately lives in the dry, inland areas of south and southwestern Africa.

They have been seen in numbers approaching 250,000, are fast runners (up to 90 km/55 mph), terrific leapers (up to 3.5 m/11.5 ft) and graceful long jumpers (15 m/nearly 50 feet).

In Afrikaans (and Dutch), "spring" means "to jump" and "bok" means "antelope" or "goat."
