Target - Second Bomb, Primary Target - Kokura

Photo of Kokura, Japan-where the second bomb was targeted at the Kokura arsenal

In August of 1945, Kokura was the site of a large arsenal used by the Japanese governement during World War II.  Because of that arsenal, Kokura was the primary target for the second atomic bomb.

By the time the plane delivering the second bomb had reached Kokura, however, the aiming point was clouded by smoke and haze.  Instead of dropping the bomb on Kukura, Bockscar (the B-29 carrying the bomb) flew to Nagasaki instead.
