The Decameron, by Geovanni Boccaccio.

During the Black Death's fourteenth-century visit to Italy, ten people (seven women and three men) escape Florence to Fiesole (then the countryside).  Every day these ten people elect a king or queen who will then dictate the day's story theme.

Centering mostly on relationships between people, the Decameron's stories provide a glimpse into medieval life from a storytelling perspective.
