Student Stories on the Lighthouse of Alexandria - The Pharos Lighthouse by Andrea and Elana

A story by Elana Rudnick & Andrea Avella

Have you ever heard of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient world? If so, then you might realize that the lighthouse of Alexandria is one of them.

The lighthouse of Alexandria was made in 247 BC through 280 BC, which was 33 years, but it got damaged by THREE huge Earthquakes. The last quake destroyed it.

The lighthouse was the third-longest surviving ancient wonder until 1480, when the last of its remnant stones were used to build the Citadel of Qaitbay on the site. These three huge Earthquakes must have been strong enough to hurt thousands of people. An estimated three million people were affected by the quake. Death-toll estimates range from 100,000 to about 160,000. Just imagine a huge structure falling onto you.

This lighthouse was 393 feet tall which was 119.79 meters. That's very tall. If something like that fell on a person, it would crush all your bones and that can kill you very quickly. You might actually die before it touches you because of how scared you are. It would trigger your body to have a rush of adrenaline, which is an involuntary response controlled by the autonomic nervous system.

But just imagine who made the lighthouse that tall.

This man named Sostratus of Cnidus made this:

The lighthouse on Pharos Island at Alexandria, Egypt.

When the Lighthouse of Alexandria was destroyed, it was in the 14th Century. This time it was destroyed, not just damaged, by an Earthquake. The Lighthouse of Alexandria was a 3-tier construction.

The Pharos Lighthouse is a really well known building and very famous until now. This will also continue for a long time.

Ptolemy Soter decided to build the Pharos Lighthouse after Alexander the Great’s death to honor him. The Pharos Lighthouse, also known as the Lighthouse of Alexandria, holds the crown for being the first-ever lighthouse in the world.

This lighthouse was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world not only for being the first of its kind but also for being the tallest architectural structure of that time except for the Great Pyramid of Egypt. Isn't it interesting that two of the ancient world's seven wonders were in Egypt?

The design of the lighthouse was not anywhere even close to the modern day lighthouse structures. It resembled the structure of 20th-century skyscrapers.
