The Restless Conscience - Germans Resist Hitler

Disregarding personal peril, Germans - like Dietrich Bonhoeffer - resisted Hitler.  Even some of Germany's military officers tried to end the Nazi regime.

This clip, from an award-winning documentary entitled "The Restless Conscience,"  brings to light twenty separate plots against Hitler.  None succeeded, but those who tried paid the ultimate price.

In his film review, Hal Hinson (of the Washington Post) said:

Most of the resisters were killed, though some only after being subjected to public humiliation in vicious show trials. The footage Beller includes from these trials is devastating; it shows the full extent to which these men and women went against the current of their times. Though less comprehensive than Ophuls's "The Sorrow and the Pity," it explores the same heroism of spirit and, in doing so, deserves an exalted place alongside it.

The documentary also helps its viewers to ponder this question:  "What would I have done, were I living under Hitler's rule?"
