Thomas Jefferson on Native Americans

Thomas Jefferson had an opinion on how his country treated Native Americans.  On the 13th of August, 1786, he wrote a letter to Benjamin Hawkins containing these words:

...the two principles on which our conduct towards the Indians should be founded, are justice & fear.  after the injuries we have done them, they cannot love us...
