Tony Mendez was an "exfiltration" specialist during November of 1979. As such, he was responsible for finding creative ways to remove people from hostile situations.
When the U.S. government learned that some American diplomats in Iran had avoided capture, during the hostage crisis, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was notified. Mendez, then a CIA employee, worked on a plan to help six Americans escape from Iran.
In this photo, taken by a White House photographer, Mendez is with then-President Jimmy Carter.
