Under the Tuscan Sun - Summary

Under the Tuscan Sun is a movie about the life of recently divorced writer, Frances Mayes, who on a whim moves to Tuscany. Looking for a change in life, Frances invests her life’s savings to buy a villa in Cortona (a town in the region of Italy known as Tuscany).

A writer from San Francisco, Frances Mayes (Diane Lane) is happy with her seemingly perfect life. When she finds out that her husband has been cheating on her, she is devastated. Her husband gets the house in the divorce and lives there with his much-younger, pregnant girlfriend. Frances is depressed and is unable to write. Her best friend Patti (Sandra Oh), who is expecting a child, thinks Frances might never recover. Patti gives Frances a ticket to Tuscany in hopes that an Italian vacation will end her depression.

In Tuscany, Frances’ tour group stops in the small town of Cortona where she notices an advertisement for a villa for sale. She rejoins her tour group on the bus, and just outside of town, the bus stops to allow a flock of sheep to cross the road. While they wait, Frances realizes that they have stopped in front of the villa that is for sale. Taking it as a sign, she gets off the bus and purchases the villa.

Frances’ villa is in need of repair so she hires a crew of Polish immigrants to work on the house. Frances develops friendships with her workers as well as her Italian neighbors. She has a brief relationship with Marcello (Raoul Bova).

Frances is about to give up on happiness when one of her Polish workers, a teenager named Pawel (Pawel Szajda), and a neighbor's young daughter come to her for help. Her father does not approve of him, yet they are very much in love and want to get married. Frances persuades the girl's family to support their love, and the young couple is soon married at the villa. During the wedding celebration, Frances meets an American writer who is traveling in Tuscany, and their attraction for each other points to a romantic future.
