Union of South Africa - Map

Union of South Africa - Map Disasters Civil Rights Government Social Studies World History

After Britain won the second Boer War, South Africa became known as the Union of South Africa.  This map depicts that country's boundaries (in 1914) and also shows other European claims on the African continent during the same time frame.

To learn how non-whites (referred to as "natives") were viewed during the early years of the 20th century, see The Union of South Africa, by Robert Henry Brand.  Published in 1909, the book devotes an entire section (Chapter X) to "Natives."  Be warned ... the book's matter-of-fact wording, and choice of descriptive terms, reflect norms and attitudes of the time.
