V-2 Rocket Strike - Antwerp Famous Historical Events Social Studies Tragedies and Triumphs Disasters

Germany's V-2 Rocket was one of the world's first weapons of mass destruction.  In this photograph, we see the damage which a V-2 inflicted on Antwerp - the provincial capital of Antwerpen, in the Flemish Region of Belgium - near the end of 1944. 

This strike, which occurred on December 16, 1944 - the first day of Germany's Ardennes offensive (more commonly known as "The Battle of the Bulge") - resulted in the deaths of 638 people.
