Velociraptor Skull

Velociraptor Skull Geography STEM Visual Arts Archeological Wonders

This image depicts the skull of a Velociraptor which is maintained at the American Museum of Natural History.

Henry F. Osborne named this creature after finding evidence of its existence in Mongolia.  If we break down the Latin, which Osborne used, we can translate its name into English:

  • Velox means speedy (or swift)
  • Raptor means thief (or robber)

Ergo ... Velociraptor means "speedy thief" or (said differently) "swift robber."
