Venerable Bede Drawing Legends and Legendary People World History History Famous People

Venerable Bede (also known as "Saint Bede" and "Saint Bede the Venerable") was an English monk at the monastery of Saint Peter at Monkwearmouth in Northumbria.  He lived between c. 672-735 AD. 

Because of his major historical work - Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum (The Ecclesiastical History of the English People), he is called "The Father of English History."

His tomb is in Durham Cathedral.

This image of Bede was created centuries after his death.  It is part of the Nuremberg Chronicle of 1493.
