Victim of Pompeii's Disaster Ancient Places and/or Civilizations Disasters Famous Historical Events World History Archeological Wonders

Pompeii was hidden, under the earth, for thousands of years.  What happened on the day - "No Ordinary Day" - in 79 AD when a pyroclastic flow from a nearby volcano (Mt. Vesuvius) buried the people of Pompeii who had not already fled?

Experts believe that around 2,600 people were still in Pompeii when the city was overwhelmed by volcanic material.  This image depicts a plaster cast of one of those victims.
