Vin Mariani

Vin Mariani

Around 1863, Angelo Mariani - a Frenchman born on the island of Corsica - decided to mix coca leaves with French wine.  His product was called Vin Mariani, and it was hugely successful.

What caused Mariani to even think about mixing coca leaves with wine?  He'd read an article, published in 1858, written by Paolo Mantegazza (an Italian scientist).  The article extoled the virtues of coca leaves for medicinal purposes.  Its title, in English translation, is:

On the Hygienic and Medicinal Properties of Coca and on Nervine Nourishment in General

Mariani's advertisements, about his French wine with coca leaves, attracted attention and followers.  People around the world started drinking his concoction.  Fans reportedly included Queen Victoria and the Pope.

This image depicts one of his ads. It is based on a lithograph of Jules Cheret, from 1894.
