Washington City in the 1840s

Washington City in the 1840s American History Geography Government Nineteenth Century Life

America's capital city was known as "Washington City" before it was called Washington, D.C. (standing for the "District of Columbia").

This view, of the town and its environs (including Georgetown), depicts how it appeared in 1849, about eight years after Solomon Northup was betrayed and sold as a slave in Washington City.
