What Ifs of History - English Instead of French

Knight - by Christopher Gravett Medieval Times Social Studies Visual Arts History

It's fun to speculate about the "What Ifs" of history. Here's one that's especially intriguing. It has to do with English versus French.

  • Did you know that the language of "Chivalry"—or the language of Knights—was French? Even in Britain?
  • Did you know that in Britain (after the 1066 Battle of Hastings) English was the language of "the conquered" and French was the language of "the conquerors?"
  • Did you know that an English King (Henry I) once charged the French King with "threatening to wipe out the English tongue?"

Can you imagine what that would have meant for subsequent generations—including Americans—if Henry's worries about language had come to pass?

You can learn all about these issues—and more—in Knight, by Christopher Gravett.  Thanks to Osprey (the publisher) and Google Books, much of this work is available for online reading.
